The Reading Room at Tacoma's University of Puget
Sound Library Richards Photography Collection, Tacoma Public
Library
So many books, so little time. Whats a
dedicated reader to do? Good question. We wish we had one good answer. We
don't. We have lots of suggestions, however, that will start you on your search
for the next terrific book to read.
One of the common misconceptions about those of us
fortunate to work in a library is that we spend lots of time at work reading
books. Hah! Nothing could be further from the truth. We, and our literary
colleagues, do read lots of book reviews, visit book-related sites on the web,
read propaganda about upcoming titles from publishing houses, and sometimes
even talk to an author or two (it has been known to happen). We also read
(albeit quickly) lots of book jackets as they pass through our hands on the way
to yours. Better still, almost everyone we meet seems to have a favorite book
we absolutely must read.
All this information, incidental and otherwise, gets
tossed into a pot, mixed with a pinch of insatiable curiosity and a cup of
finely-honed information-hunting skills, then seasoned with healthy spoonfuls
of knowledge and experience and, voila - we can usually provide patrons with
some cautious suggestions to feed their voracious appetite . . . a robust
selection of quintessential non-fiction or, perhaps, a whimsical sampling of
romance, mystery and adventure -- with a dash of literary fiction for the more
spirited reader.
The resources we include here are some of our tools, some of our
favorite sites, information about the national and regional literary world, and
some places to visit that are simply too good for bibliophiles to pass
up.
