poster collection (so far) June 13 - July 19, 2005
Handforth Gallery, Main Library 1102 Tacoma Avenue South,
Beautiful Angle (website) combines guerilla
art and timeless craft. For the last three years, the duo's Lance Kagey and Tom
Llewellyn) letterpress posters have adorned the abandoned buildings and
lamposts of Tacoma each month. Using a mixture of hard-carved plates, digital
imagery, and wood and lead type, the resulting posters address themes of faith,
politics, and place, all from a uniquely Tacoma-centric point of view. Gallery
hours are from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, and from 9
a.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday & Saturday.
July 2005
Booktalk &
Signing Phillip Jennings, author of NAM A RAMA Wednesday,
June 29 at 7 p.m. Moore Library (215 South 56th Street.).
What Joseph Heller did for World War II, what Richard
Hooker did for the Korean War in M*A*S*H, no one has been able to do for
Vietnam, until now. Phillip Jennings (web
site) is a true patriot, a decorated Marine Corps Captain who served three
years in Vietnam and Laos, including flying for Air America, and then worked
for the CIA. Like Heller and Hooker, he did his duty, but he did it with his
eyes open. Now, transformed by his wild imagination, he shows us what he saw.
Never before has the insanity of the Vietnam war been so scathingly and
entertainingly depicted..
