WWW Employment Sites For People with Disabilities

Career Research

Washington Occupational Information System (WOIS) (www.wois.org/online/wci.cfm)
WOIS provides much the same information as the federal Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) but is specific to Washington State (i.e. it provides average Washington salaries for various professions, etc.). Note: This is for in-library use only. As an alternative to WOIS, you can use Washington's Occupational Information Center to take a look at the occupations with the greatest number of unemployment claims.

Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) (www.bls.gov/OCO)
The premier source (courtesy of the federal government) for career research. Go here to find out about prospective careers: which is the highest paying? Which have the best prospects for advancement? What will a profession look like ten years from now? Do not follow this link expecting to find out about specific job openings. Other links on this handout should take care of that.

Job Sites

America's Job Bank (www.ajb.dni.us)
is one of the largest job banks (i.e. Web sites with job ads submitted by employers) on the Internet. Search here for job openings across the U.S. Monster.com is another example of a large Internet job bank.

Pacific Northwest Classifieds (www.wa.gov/esd/work/jobs.htm)
Brought to us by the State of Washington, this site links directly to major newspapers and employers in Washington, Idaho, and Oregon as well as personnel offices in a variety of towns and counties.

Work Source Washington (work.wa.gov)
an outstanding resource for finding jobs in Washington state, courtesy of the state government.

USA Jobs (www.usajobs.opm.gov)
This site provides access to job listings for the federal government.

Government Information Sites

DisabilityInfo.gov (www.disabilityinfo.gov)
DisabilityInfo.gov is a one-stop-shop for federal government information for people with disabilities, including information for job seekers. Provides links to some job databases, and to GovBenefits.com.

Federal Employment of People with Disabilities (www.opm.gov/disability/index.asp)
This site is designed to provide a simple and straightforward mechanism to help Americans, with and without disabilities, better understand how to hire and retain persons with disabilities. Go to "Applicants and Employees" and then "Recruiting and Hiring" for practical information about finding a job, job interviews, jobs for students and more. This site is also very strong on guiding one through information about reasonable accommodations and submitting requests.

General Information Sites

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (www.usdoj.gov/crt/ada/adahom1.htm), and the employability of people with disabilities."

Job Accommodation Network (JAN) (www.jan.wvu.edu/english/homeus.htm))
The JAM is "a free consulting service that provides information about job accommodations.

Job Seeking Skills for People with Disabilities (www.csun.edu/~sp20558/dis/sh.html)
This resource guide from California State Northridge provides information such as identifying occupations, how to complete job applications, developing resumes, writing cover letters, interviewing skills, finding internships, and personal marketing skills. There are also sections on employee/employer expectations as well as links to ADA information.

Washington State Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) (www1.dshs.wa.gov/dvr)
The DVR's mission is "to enable individuals with disabilities to obtain and keep employment," a vitally important site for potential employees and employers alike.
