Frequently Asked Questions

Who may use this service?
Anyone. Anywhere. You don't need to have a Tacoma Public Library card.

What kind of questions can I ask?
This service is designed for specific questions with brief, factual answers. For answers to more complex questions, or research assistance, please visit your neighborhood library.

When will my question be answered?
Library staff will do their best to answer your question, or suggest how you can further pursue your question, within 24 hours (one business day - excluding weekends and holidays). However, some questions may require more time. If clarification is needed about your question, the process may take a little longer.

Can I reserve a book on-line?
Yes. Use the web catalog to search for the titles you want. If you have a valid Tacoma Public Library card, choose the link for "Full Details and Place Holds". Click on the "Hold" icon (looks like a hand). You will be prompted for a library card number and a privacy PIN, as well as where you want the item to be sent for you to pick up. If you have given library staff an e-mail address at registration or re-registration you will be informed via e-mail when the material can be picked up. If you are not comfortable putting your library card and PIN on the Internet you can reserve any book at the library by calling or visiting your local library. You can reach our Quick Information line by calling 591-5666 during the Main library's regular business hours.

What is a PIN?
Your PIN (personal identification number) is assigned at the time you register for a Tacoma Public Library card. It is most often the last 4 digits of your phone number.

Can I renew a book on-line?
Yes. Our online catalog allows for renewal of items over the Internet. From the online catalog click on Renew Items/View Account. You will need to enter your library card number and PIN.

How do I ask a question?
To help us answer your question correctly, please be as specific as possible in your request. Provide us with as many details as possible: who, what, where, when. Telling us WHY will also be very helpful (though it's not necessary). It is helpful to tell us if you have a deadline.

You can also get answers to your questions from the Librarians at any of our reference desks, or by calling our Quick Information Telephone Reference at (253) 591-5666.
